About the Alaskan Klee Kai Breed

Many people compare the Alaskan Klee Kai to the popular Siberian Husky due to their similar fur markings.

While they are both Spitz breed dogs, the Alaskan Klee Kai is significantly smaller in size. Behavior-wise, they are also utmost opposites. Compared to huskies, which are known for being friendly to everyone, AKKs tend to be shy, skittish and wary around strangers.

Temperament and Personality

The Alaskan Klee Kai is an intelligent, curious, and active breed. While they may be ‘aloof’ to those they don’t know, they are incredibly loyal and loving to their families.

They also love and crave attention from their humans. They want to be involved with everything and won’t hesitate to let you know if something isn’t going their way.

Health

Compared to other breeds, the Alaskan Klee Kai is not prone to that many genetic conditions. It’s important to remember, however, that they’re still a relatively new breed of dog and genetic conditions can take many years to surface.

Some health issues that are more common among the breed include factor VII deficiency, luxating patella, thyroid disease, and some cardiac conditions.

It’s also common for puppies to retain baby teeth, which can cause problems down the line when their adult teeth emerges. Fortunately, this can fixed easily with a tooth extraction, usually at the same time as their neutering or spaying appointment.

Shedding

The Alaskan Klee Kai has two layers of fur, the outer coat and the inner coat, the latter of which they shed twice a year.

During this period, frequent brushing is recommended to remove the loose fur.

Purchasing an Alaskan Klee Kai

Unfortunately, not all dog breeders are created equal and there are scammers that will take advantage of those who are inexperienced. For example, there are many ‘breeders’ that sell Alaskan Klee Kai mixes as pure bred Alaskan Klee Kai.

Given that, it’s crucial that you do adequate research before committing to a puppy. If possible, reach out to previous adopters and buyers and ask to hear about their experiences regarding the breeder.
